The quickest check for a silent AirPod
Put both AirPods in a charged case for 30 seconds. Check each earbud’s battery on your iPhone or iPad, then test the silent AirPod by itself. If it remains silent, follow the checks below before resetting your model.
Applies to: AirPods 1–4 and AirPods Pro 1–3. AirPods Max use different troubleshooting steps.
What is happening with your AirPods?
Start by finding out whether the affected earbud has no power, no connection, or simply quieter sound. Work through the checks below in order and test the same audio after each change. Stop when both sides play normally.
One side is completely silent

Is the speaker mesh obstructed, or is balance off-center?

Check replacement setup1. Check whether both AirPods are charging
Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and inspect the battery readings for the left and right earbud separately. A charged case alone does not tell you whether the silent earbud has power. If one side is missing or empty, reseat that earbud and check again.
If the case also has no charge, connect it to power. A missing earbud reading is a useful clue: focus on the case and charging before changing audio settings. Note whether the same side repeatedly fails to appear.
2. Inspect the mesh and check audio balance
For a quiet or muffled AirPod, inspect the speaker mesh; remove detachable Pro ear tips to see it. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual and put Balance in the center. Retest at a comfortable volume.
Cleaning methods differ by model. Use Apple’s illustrated AirPods or AirPods Pro instructions linked below for the exact meshes and materials. Avoid sharp tools, abrasive cleaners, and putting objects into charging ports. Start with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth for the case exterior.
After wet cleaning, Apple’s guides specify letting the earbuds dry completely for at least two hours before using or charging them. A rinse procedure for one model is not a general instruction for every AirPod or charging case.
3. Separate an earbud fault from a device or app issue
Try the affected earbud alone while the working one stays in the closed case. If it plays, return both to the case for another 30 seconds and test the pair again.
Next, compare a second audio app and, if available, another phone or computer. This is a diagnostic comparison: a problem limited to one app or device points toward that source; the same silent earbud across devices points toward the earbuds, charging, or pairing.
On a computer or Android phone, verify that AirPods are the selected audio output and look for left/right balance in the device’s sound or accessibility settings. Menu names vary. If only calls fail, compare the call app’s output selection with the app that plays music successfully.
4. Reset using the instructions for your model
First place both earbuds in the case, shut the lid, and wait 30 seconds. In your paired iPhone or iPad’s Bluetooth settings, forget the AirPods if listed. Open the lid, then use the matching method below.
AirPods 1, 2, 3 · AirPods Pro 1, 2
Hold the rear setup button for about 15 seconds. Wait for amber flashing followed by white, then reconnect using your device’s onscreen instructions.
AirPods 4 · AirPods Pro 3
Double-tap the case front with the status light on. Double-tap again as it flashes white, then a third time as the flashing speeds up. After amber followed by white, reconnect.
If white flashing never appears, close the lid for 20 seconds, reopen it, and repeat the method for your model. Resetting clears custom AirPods settings; be ready to configure them again.
5. Check software and allow firmware to update
Update the paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac to its latest supported operating system. AirPods firmware installs automatically; there is no manual update button. With Bluetooth enabled, connect the earbuds to your device and connect that device to Wi-Fi.
Connect the case to power, place both earbuds inside, close the lid, and leave them within Bluetooth range of the Apple device for at least 30 minutes. Reconnect afterward and check the firmware in AirPods settings. This can address software issues, but it cannot repair a damaged speaker or battery.
If you only use Android or Windows and do not have an Apple device, Apple says an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider can help update firmware.
6. If one AirPod still does not work
If this started after replacing an earbud or case, follow Apple’s replacement setup guide. It includes a separate preparation and pairing sequence; do not assume a replacement is ready to use immediately.
If the same side remains silent after charging, cleaning, a model-appropriate reset, and a test on another device, arrange a service assessment. Record which side fails, whether it appears in the battery display, the AirPods model, and the checks already completed. These details help support distinguish charging, speaker, and connection problems.
Ask Apple about replacing an individual earbud if needed. Availability, coverage, and any service charge depend on your model, location, and coverage; confirm those details with Apple before ordering parts.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the same AirPod keep cutting out?
Track whether its battery reading disappears, whether it fails only in one app, and whether another device has the same problem. Those comparisons help distinguish a charging issue from a source or connection issue. Repeated failure after the checks in this guide warrants a service assessment.
Should I reset first if one AirPod is quieter?
Start with the mesh and audio-balance checks in step 2. Quieter sound and complete silence are different symptoms; resetting will not remove a physical obstruction.
Can a reset fix an AirPod that will not charge?
A reset is a troubleshooting step, not a battery repair. If the earbud never appears in the battery display, complete the charging checks and have persistent charging faults assessed.
Can I troubleshoot AirPods on Android or Windows?
Yes. Compare apps, check the selected output and balance controls, and test another device. The case reset depends on the AirPods model. The firmware section explains the Apple-device requirement for automatic updates.
What should I tell support if nothing works?
Share the AirPods model, the affected side, its battery reading, when the issue began, and whether it also happens on another device. Mention any replacement earbud and the troubleshooting steps you completed.
