One kind is a watch that has always been like this and is simply doing more than you think — cellular, Always On, workouts with GPS. The other is a watch that changed, usually after an update or as the battery aged. The first is a settings conversation and the second is a hardware one, so it is worth establishing which you have before touching anything.

A watch that has just updated is re-indexing, re-syncing and finishing background work that does not appear anywhere in the interface, and the battery cost of that is temporary.
This matters because the update is usually the last thing that changed, so it collects the blame. People turn off features, unpair and re-pair, and reset settings during exactly the window in which the watch would have settled by itself — and then credit whichever change they made last.
So if the drain began within a day or two of an update, the correct action is to do nothing for a few days and look again. If it is still draining after that, everything below applies and the update has been ruled out rather than assumed.

2. The connection it has decides what it costs
Apple states that the Apple Watch is most efficient when it has a Bluetooth connection to the iPhone it is paired with, and advises keeping the watch and iPhone within range of each other when battery life is a priority. That single fact explains a great many mysterious bad days: a watch separated from its phone falls back to Wi-Fi or cellular and works considerably harder.
Where it cannot use Bluetooth, the order still matters. Apple's guidance is that Wi-Fi uses less battery power than cellular networks, so use Wi-Fi where you can. A cellular watch left to its own connection all day is doing the most expensive thing available to it.
Signal strength is the part people miss. Apple notes that Wi-Fi and cellular connections use less battery power in places with strong signal, which is the reverse of the intuition that a weak signal means less work. A radio struggling to hold a marginal connection transmits harder and more often, so a basement office or a rural commute costs far more battery than a strong signal does.
For a sustained period of weak signal, Apple's suggestion is Airplane Mode. That is a real answer rather than a workaround: a watch that cannot usefully connect is better off not trying.

3. Low Power Mode and the Always On display
Low Power Mode is the blunt instrument and it works. Apple's route is the battery percentage button in Control Center, and it disables certain features to reduce consumption. It is worth knowing it exists as a deliberate choice for a long day rather than as an emergency measure at nine percent.
The Always On display is the separate lever, and Apple points out that it can be turned off in Display & Brightness independently of Low Power Mode. That distinction is useful: you can keep everything else working normally and remove what is, on any watch that has it, a substantial continuous cost.
Apple also notes that newer models can play audio through the built-in speaker, and that this drains the battery more quickly — its recommendation is to listen via AirPods or another Bluetooth audio device instead. If you have started using the watch's speaker for podcasts or calls, that alone can account for a change you had attributed to something else.
4. Workouts, and the setting most people never find
Long outdoor workouts are the heaviest thing most people ask an Apple Watch to do, because GPS and continuous heart rate readings run for the whole session. A watch that is fine all week and then arrives home from a long hike at fifteen percent is not faulty.
Apple documents a specific remedy for this: for outdoor walking, running and hiking workouts in the Workout app, you can have the watch take fewer GPS and heart rate readings, which extends battery life during long workouts. It is a setting in the Workout app rather than in the main Settings list, which is why it goes unnoticed.
The trade is real and worth stating: fewer readings means slightly less granular route and heart rate data. For a marathon or a full day's walking that is usually a good trade, and for a twenty-minute run it is not worth making.
This is the one setting on this page that is specific rather than general. If your drain is workout-shaped, it is the first thing to change.
5. The charging settings that look like drain
Optimized Battery Charging and Optimized Charge Limit exist to protect the battery over years, and they do it by holding the charge back — which can read as the watch never reaching full, or as losing charge faster than expected because it started lower than you assumed.
Apple's guidance is that you can temporarily disable Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit in Battery Health settings when you need maximum longevity between charges. Temporarily is the operative word: these settings are there for a reason, and leaving them off permanently trades long-term battery health for a day's convenience.
One detail from Apple's documentation is worth knowing because it surprises people: on Apple Watch SE, Series 6, Series 7 and Series 8, turning off Optimized Battery Charging also turns off Optimized Charge Limit. They are not independent switches on those models.
6. Battery health, and what to tell Apple
Before spending more time on settings, look at Maximum Capacity in Battery Health. It is a percentage of the battery's original capacity, and it puts a number on the difference between a watch that is configured badly and one that is simply old. A watch at 80 percent will not last as long as it did when new, and no setting will restore that.
Apple's escalation is unambiguous: if Battery Health reports Battery Needs Service, contact Apple Support. At that point the battery has degraded past the point where configuration matters, and the answer is a service appointment rather than another week of changing settings.
When you do contact Apple, describe the pattern rather than the symptom. Say when it started and whether that coincided with a watchOS update, whether the watch is usually near its iPhone or away from it, whether it is a cellular model, whether Always On is enabled, what a typical day's workouts look like, and what Maximum Capacity reads. Those answers separate a settings problem from a signal problem from a worn battery, and they are the same questions anyone competent will ask.
