Take the SD card out before you try anything else
GoPro's own recovery procedure begins by disconnecting external power and removing the SD card, and that ordering is the diagnosis rather than housekeeping. A corrupted card can hang the camera during boot, so it never reaches a state where it looks powered on. Remove the card, take the battery out for five seconds, put it back, and press the Mode button. A camera that wakes with the card out and dies with it in has a card fault, not a camera fault — and that is a completely different repair.
Applies to: HERO12, HERO11, HERO10, HERO9, HERO8 Black and MAX use the sequence below. HERO11 Black Mini uses the Status/Pair button in place of Mode, and HERO7, HERO6, HERO5 and HERO (2018) differ slightly — GoPro publishes a per-model list, so check yours before assuming the button is the same.
How far does it get?
A GoPro that will not power on has three plausible causes and they are separable without tools: a corrupted SD card stalling the boot, a battery that is too flat or has lost contact, or the camera itself. GoPro's published sequence tests them in that order, and the reason it works is that each step removes one variable — first the card, then the battery, then external power with no battery at all. Follow it in order and do not skip the waits.

The published procedure for HERO12 through HERO8 Black and MAX opens the same way every time: disconnect the camera from any external power source and remove the SD card. Then remove the battery, wait five seconds, and reinsert it. Press the Mode button and watch for any sign of life at all — GoPro's wording is to look for LED illumination, beeps, or a response from the camera's screens, because a camera that beeps without lighting the screen is still telling you it has power.
If there is no response, press and hold the Mode button for ten seconds. Then leave the camera alone for five seconds before pressing Mode again. Both waits are in the instructions and both matter: the hold forces a reset, and the pause afterwards lets the camera settle into an off state rather than catching it mid-sequence.
The reason the card comes out first is that a corrupted card can hang the camera while it is mounting the filesystem at boot, before anything appears on screen. From the outside that is indistinguishable from a dead battery or a dead camera. Removing the card eliminates it as a variable in five seconds, which is why it belongs at step one rather than as an afterthought.
On HERO11 Black Mini the equivalent button is Status/Pair rather than Mode, and the ten-second hold applies to that button instead. Check GoPro’s per-model instructions if your camera is older than HERO8.
2. Run it with no battery at all
This is the step that separates a failed battery from a failed camera, and it is the one people skip because it feels wrong. GoPro's instruction is to remove the battery entirely and connect the camera to a 5V/2A wall charger — 5V/1A minimum — using the GoPro USB Type-C cable. The camera can run on external power alone, so a camera that comes to life this way has working electronics and a battery problem.
Watch closely for the front LED to flash within five seconds. GoPro warns that it is fast and to be ready for it, which is a fair warning — the flash is easy to miss, and missing it leads people to conclude the camera is dead when it responded. Let it sit five seconds, then try to turn it on with the battery still removed.
If nothing happens, change the variables one at a time: a different USB Type-C cable and a different charging source. A charge-only cable, an underpowered laptop port, or a low-current phone charger will all fail to bring up a camera that a proper 5V/2A wall charger starts immediately. This is the same trap as every other USB-C device in this guide's neighbours, and it is worth two minutes to eliminate.

3. Give a flat battery real time
If the camera powers on with no battery, GoPro's next step is to power it off, insert the battery, and again look for the front LED to flash. Then watch for the front LED to turn on and stay on — and here the instruction is explicit that the battery can charge for several minutes before that happens if it is severely depleted. A deeply discharged lithium battery draws very little at first and shows nothing.
The published wait is longer than most people give it: after the front LED has been on for ten minutes, remove the camera from the charging source and press the Mode button. Ten minutes on the charger before the first attempt is the number, and shortening it is a common reason this procedure appears to fail on a camera that would have recovered.
Batteries that have sat flat for months, or been stored in a cold garage over winter, are the usual candidates here. If the camera runs perfectly on external power and refuses on a battery that has had a proper charge, the battery is the failed part — and on a GoPro that is a user-replaceable item rather than a service job.
4. Put the card back last, and test it deliberately
GoPro's sequence ends the way it started — with the card. Once the camera turns on, power it off, insert the SD card, wait five seconds, then power on and record a sample video. That final test is not a formality: it is what confirms whether the card was the original cause, and skipping it means you never find out.
A camera that boots fine without the card and stalls or freezes with it in has a corrupted card. GoPro's guidance for the related NO SD error is specific and slightly counter-intuitive: format the card on a computer before it can be used in the camera again, using a microSD card reader. In-camera formatting is the routine maintenance operation; a card the camera cannot properly read needs the computer to rebuild it.
There is also a documented test that separates a broken card from one that is merely too slow. GoPro's procedure for SD ERR is to format the card, then record two videos — one at a low resolution and frame rate, and one at high. An error that appears only on the high-performance recording means the card cannot keep up with the camera's output, which points at a faster card from GoPro's recommended list rather than a fault. An error on both points at the card itself or at firmware, and a manual camera update is the next step.
Back up anything you care about before formatting. Both procedures above erase the card completely, and a card that is failing is exactly the one whose contents you most want off it first.
5. If it turns on but freezes or ignores you
A camera that powers on but does not respond to buttons, screen taps or voice commands is a different fault from one that will not start, and GoPro treats it separately. The same ten-second hold on the Mode button resets it, and if that produces nothing, removing and reinserting the battery forces the issue.
Freezing that recurs points at one of two causes: the card or the firmware. Test by using the camera without the SD card for a while — if it stops freezing, the card is responsible, and section 4 applies. If it freezes just as readily with no card in, the firmware is the suspect and reinstalling the current update cleanly is the documented response.
Update manually rather than over the app when a camera is misbehaving. A camera that freezes partway through an over-the-air update can end up worse off, and GoPro publishes a manual update route that writes the firmware from a computer via the card — which is more reliable precisely because it does not depend on the camera staying responsive.
6. When it is the camera, and what to tell support
GoPro's procedure has two explicit exit points, and reaching either is a real answer rather than a failure to try hard enough. If the camera will not power on with the battery removed and connected to a known-good charger and cable, contact support. And if it powers on while plugged in but will not run unplugged after a proper charge, that is the battery — which you can replace yourself.
Water is worth being honest about before spending anything. A GoPro that stopped working after a dive, especially in salt water, may have taken damage through a failed door seal or a loose battery door, and no reset sequence addresses corrosion. Salt water in particular needs rinsing in fresh water and thorough drying immediately, and a camera that has been through it and failed is often beyond a home fix.
When you contact support, give them the sequence rather than the symptom. Say whether the camera responds with the SD card removed, whether the front LED flashed on external power with the battery out, whether it ran unplugged after ten minutes of charging, whether a second card or cable changed anything, and whether it has been in water. Those five answers separate a corrupted card from a dead battery from a camera that needs service.
