Count how many lights are unreachable before anything else
If every light is unreachable, the problem is the Bridge, and its three status lights will tell you which part has failed. If only one or a few are unreachable, the Bridge is fine and those bulbs have either lost mains power at a wall switch or fallen out of Zigbee range. That count is the whole diagnosis, and it takes one glance at the app — the two cases have nothing in common as fixes, and most wasted effort here comes from treating a single dead bulb as a network problem.
Applies to: Philips Hue bulbs, light strips, lamps and plugs on a Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro. Bulbs used over Bluetooth without a Bridge behave differently and are noted at the end. Accessories such as dimmer switches and motion sensors are battery powered and covered in section 5.
How many lights are unreachable?
Unreachable does not mean broken. It means the Bridge sent a message and got no answer, and the three ordinary reasons for that are: the bulb has no power, the bulb is too far from the mesh, or the Bridge itself is not running. Hue lights communicate over Zigbee, a separate radio network from your Wi-Fi, and understanding that one fact explains most of what follows — including why a light switch on the wall is the most common culprit.

The Bridge has three status lights and Philips documents each one, which makes it a proper diagnostic rather than decoration. The left light means the Bridge is connected to power. The middle light means it is connected to your network through a router or modem. The right light means it is connected to the Hue internet services. Read them left to right and stop at the first one that is off — that is where the chain breaks.
A missing middle light points at the Ethernet run. Check the cable is fully inserted at both ends, since the Bridge connects to the router by Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi and a half-seated plug is a common cause. Restarting both helps: unplug the router and the Bridge for around 30 seconds, then power the router up first and let it settle before the Bridge, so the Bridge finds a working network when it boots.
A missing right light has a specific and slightly surprising cause. Philips states that the third light will not turn on if the Bridge is not running the latest software version, and the fix is to update it from the Hue app under Settings and software update — noting that you may have to repeat the step. Local control usually still works in that state, which is why lights can respond in the app on your home Wi-Fi and be unreachable from outside the house.

2. The wall switch is the usual culprit
A Hue bulb is a computer that needs mains power to answer. Cut it at the wall switch and it is not off in the smart sense, it is unplugged — the app cannot see it, cannot turn it on, and reports it unreachable. This accounts for most single-bulb cases, and it is why the first question is which fitting the light is in and whether anyone has used the switch on the wall.
Turn the switch back on and give the bulb a moment to rejoin. It should reappear in the app on its own without any re-pairing, because the bulb keeps its pairing through a power cut. If it does not come back within a minute or two, that is a different fault and section 3 applies.
The lasting fix is to stop the switch being usable in the normal way. Philips sells wall switch modules that fit behind the existing switch and keep the bulbs permanently powered while turning the switch itself into a smart control — that is exactly the problem they exist to solve. The cheaper approaches are a Hue dimmer switch mounted over the old switch, or simply agreeing with the household that the wall switch stays on.
This is also why a light can be unreachable while the bulb is completely healthy. Before suspecting a fault, confirm the fitting actually has power — an ordinary bulb in the same socket settles it in seconds.
3. Zigbee is a mesh, and powered bulbs carry it
Hue does not run over your Wi-Fi. The Bridge talks to lights over Zigbee, and every mains-powered Hue light acts as a repeater, so the lights themselves form the network that reaches the far end of the house. Philips makes the consequence explicit: the more bulbs you add, the stronger and more reliable the signal becomes. Range is roughly 30 to 40 feet from the Bridge or from the nearest Hue bulb, not from the Bridge alone.
That produces the most confusing failure in the whole system. Switching off one bulb at a wall switch removes a repeater, so bulbs further along the chain that depended on it go unreachable too — a light in a completely different room drops out because someone turned off a hallway lamp. If a cluster of lights at one end of the house went unreachable together, look for the bulb between them and the Bridge rather than at the lights that are complaining.
For a bulb that is simply too far, the fix is a relay rather than a stronger signal. Add a mains-powered Hue light between it and the nearest existing one, or move the Bridge more centrally. A Hue smart plug also acts as a repeater and is a cheap way to bridge a gap in a corridor or a stairwell. And check the practical limits while you are there: the standard Bridge supports up to 50 lights and 12 accessories, with the Bridge Pro going to 150 and more, so a large installation that has grown over years can simply be full.
4. Interference and things that block the signal
Zigbee shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi, microwaves, baby monitors and Bluetooth, so a busy band produces lights that are reachable most of the time and drop out unpredictably. The distinctive signature is intermittency: a bulb that works every morning and fails every evening is almost never a failing bulb, it is a congested radio environment.
The most effective change is usually at the router rather than the Bridge, because your Wi-Fi is the loudest neighbour. Fixing the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to channel 1, 6 or 11 leaves clean space for Zigbee, whereas a router set to auto can wander onto whatever channel the Bridge is using. Moving the Bridge away from the router by even a couple of feet helps more than it sounds, since the two are usually sitting on the same shelf.
Physical obstructions matter too. Metal is the problem material — a Bridge in a media cabinet with a metal back, or a bulb inside a metal fitting or a foil-lined shade, is genuinely hard to reach. Philips also notes that a single Bridge may not reach reliably in very large homes or separate buildings such as a garage, in which case a second Bridge rather than more repeaters is the answer.
Try moving the Bridge before buying anything. Getting it out of a cabinet and away from the router is free, and it resolves a surprising share of intermittent unreachable reports.
5. Accessories, and resetting a single stubborn light
Battery-powered accessories — dimmer switches, tap dials, motion sensors — fail differently from bulbs, because they have no mains power and do not repeat the mesh. An unresponsive accessory is most often a flat battery, and it needs to sit within range of the Bridge or the nearest bulb like anything else. For a switch that has stopped responding without being flat, holding all four buttons together until the LED turns green refreshes its connection without deleting its settings, which is worth trying before a full reset.
A full accessory reset is the next step: press and hold the setup button on the back with a small pointed object for about 10 seconds, until the LED flashes orange. That does clear its configuration, so expect to add and configure it again afterwards.
For a single bulb that stays unreachable with confirmed power and good neighbours, remove it from the Bridge in the app and add it again. This is the last software step and it is genuinely different from a power cycle — it clears a stale entry on the Bridge as well as the bulb's own state. If a bulb still refuses after being re-added while sitting a metre from the Bridge, it is a hardware fault, and Hue bulbs carry a long warranty that is worth checking before replacing one.
6. Bluetooth without a Bridge, and what to tell support
If you are using Hue bulbs over Bluetooth with no Bridge, almost none of the above applies. There is no mesh and no Zigbee network — your phone talks to each bulb directly, so range is phone-to-bulb, only one room's worth of bulbs is practical, and control from outside the house is not available at all. A bulb that is unreachable in the Bluetooth app is usually simply out of your phone's range or unpowered.
This is also the strongest reason to add a Bridge as a system grows. With a Bridge you get the repeating mesh, remote access, more lights, and the diagnostics in section 1 — the three status lights that tell you where a failure is. Without it, an unreachable bulb gives you very little to work with.
When you contact Philips support, lead with the count and the Bridge lights. Tell them how many lights are unreachable and whether they are grouped in one area, which of the three Bridge lights are lit, whether the affected fittings definitely have mains power, whether a normal bulb works in the same socket, and whether the problem is constant or comes and goes at particular times of day. Those five answers separate a Bridge fault from a wall switch from a range problem from interference.
