Does it charge while the PS5 is fully on?
Connect the controller directly to an awake PS5 with the supplied USB cable. Check its battery indicator under Accessories in the control center. Charging while awake but failing after sleep points toward rest-mode power settings. No charging in either state calls for a cable, port, and controller comparison before you blame the battery.
Applies to: Sony DualSense wireless controllers used with PS5 consoles. Third-party controllers and charging docks have their own requirements. DualSense Edge owners should also consult the Edge manual.
Where does charging stop?
A controller left plugged in overnight can still be empty in the morning. The useful question is whether charging ever started, whether the console stopped supplying power, or whether the controller cannot retain a charge. Test one part at a time so a working replacement cable does not get mistaken for a successful reset.

Is USB power enabled in rest mode?

Does another cable or console port change the result?

Does the failure follow one charging method?

Does the battery level actually increase?
Check retained charge1. Establish whether charging starts on an awake console
Use a direct USB connection and open Accessories from the PS5 control center. An animated battery with a lightning symbol indicates charging; a steady three-bar icon indicates full charge. Look at the indicator for the controller you are testing if several are connected.
Write down the starting reading, leave the controller idle while connected, and compare it later. Being able to play while plugged in is not the same observation as the battery level increasing. If charging starts here, go to the rest-mode check. If it never starts, compare cables and ports.
2. Check what the console does after you stop playing
On PS5, open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → Supply Power to USB Ports. Use Always for this comparison, then restore your preferred setting afterward. A fully powered-off console does not charge controllers; rest mode and off are different states.
Adaptive charging is model-dependent. Sony’s current guide lists it for the CFI-2000 group and specifies the USB-C connection. It adjusts charging around the connected controller and can stop supplying power when nothing is attached. If charging only fails after you connect a controller late in a rest session, repeat the test with it connected before entering rest mode.
The console’s orange power light means rest mode. The controller’s light is a separate indicator; do not use one to infer the state of the other.
3. Change the cable, then the port
Keep the console awake. Try another PS5 USB port, then a known-working charging-and-data cable. Sony recommends that cable type for troubleshooting and notes that some USB chargers cannot charge a DualSense. An unfamiliar wall charger is therefore a poor starting point for deciding the controller has failed.
Make each comparison separately: same controller and cable, different port; then same controller and port, different cable. If you have a second working controller, try it with the original combination. A fault that follows one cable is different from a fault that follows the controller through every combination.
4. Separate the charging method from battery retention
If you normally use a dock, remove it from the comparison and test the controller by USB. Successful USB charging makes a dock-side problem more plausible. Check the dock’s own power supply and seating instructions; a USB test does not establish whether its contacts or adapter work.
Conversely, a controller that reaches a full indication but immediately turns off when unplugged needs a different investigation from one that never indicates charging. Record both readings and how quickly it shuts down. That pattern can justify a service assessment, but the reading alone does not identify a failed battery or internal component.
Keep the controller at normal room temperature for the test. The DualSense manual gives a 5–35°C operating range and notes charging can be less effective outside appropriate conditions. Do not use a heater or freezer to force a charging response.
5. Reset an unresponsive controller once
For a controller that remains unresponsive, Sony’s reset procedure is to turn off the PS5, unplug the controller’s USB cable, and hold the recessed reset button on the back for at least five seconds using a small suitable tool. Reconnect to the console with the supplied USB cable and press the PS button.
Repeat the same charging comparison after the reset. If the result is unchanged, repeating the reset over and over adds no new information. If it now has power but will not control the console, use the related PS5 controller connection guide for the pairing problem.
6. Take the comparison results to support
A controller that fails with multiple working cables and console ports, while another controller succeeds, is a stronger service case than one that failed on an untested charger. Tell support whether it charges awake, what happens in rest mode, and whether USB and dock results differ.
Also report a loose connector, visible damage, or shutdown immediately after unplugging. Do not hold a damaged cable at an angle to keep using it. Sony directs persistent controller issues to PlayStation Repairs; confirm service options for your controller and region before buying a replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my controller still empty after being plugged in all night?
Repeat the awake-console test first. If that works, check rest-mode USB power and whether you selected a full shutdown. Time spent plugged into an unpowered port does not tell you anything about battery health.
Does an unlit controller mean charging failed?
Not by itself. The DualSense manual says its rest-mode charging light turns off when charging finishes. Check the battery reading and subsequent use rather than treating darkness as a fault.
Should I buy a battery if the controller only works over USB?
First establish whether the battery reading increases and whether a second cable changes the outcome. A service assessment can distinguish a battery problem from a connector or internal charging fault.
Will resetting the PS5 fix controller charging?
This guide uses the controller’s reset button, not a console factory reset. Erasing a console is not a useful first response to an isolated charging problem.
