PS5 disc not reading? Compare a second disc first

Separate a faulty PS5 disc from drive setup, database and game-launch problems before considering a reset or repair.

The short version

  1. 01Compare another clean, supported game disc before changing console settings.
  2. 02Check disc orientation and wipe fingerprints from the centre outward.
  3. 03Complete online pairing for a newly attached compatible disc drive.
  4. 04Investigate game-launch errors separately when the disc is already recognised.
  5. 05Use Safe Mode's Rebuild Database option for persistent multi-disc trouble.
  6. 06Back up before any system reinstallation or discuss persistent failures with PlayStation Repairs.

Try a second supported disc

Compare two clean game discs. If only one fails, investigate that disc before changing the console. If neither works, check drive setup and then the system database. A game that installs but fails to launch needs a different investigation from a disc the drive cannot identify.

Applies to: PS5 consoles with an installed disc drive. The detachable drive setup section applies to the CFI-2000/7000 model groups; a Digital Edition without a compatible installed drive cannot read discs.

Where does the failure happen?

Write down whether the console rejects the disc, identifies the game, or fails only when launching. Those observations keep an optical reading problem separate from installation and account problems.

1. Separate the disc from the drive

Clean fingerprints with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping outward from the centre. When the console stands vertically, insert the disc with its label facing left. Compare another supported game disc; an audio CD is not a valid test.

Our diagnostic inference: one repeatable failure with other discs working points toward the individual disc. Multiple failures justify continuing with console checks, but do not by themselves prove a failed laser.

2. Finish setup for an added disc drive

Sony's detachable drive requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. On a compatible CFI-2000/7000 console, complete the onscreen pairing before testing discs. Check the console model before assuming an accessory fits.

If installation needs correcting, follow Sony's illustrated attachment instructions with the console turned off, unplugged and cooled. A pairing prompt is a setup issue; repeatedly cleaning the disc will not complete pairing.

3. Treat a launch failure separately

If the game is recognised and installed, restart the PS5 and check system software updates. Sony's game-launch guide also directs PS5 games on USB extended storage back to internal storage. Record any error code before deleting or reinstalling the affected game.

Account access and licence troubleshooting belong to locked or digital games. They are not a substitute for testing whether the optical drive can read a disc.

4. Rebuild the database carefully

Turn the PS5 fully off. Hold Power again until the second beep, about seven seconds after the first. Connect the controller by USB and press PS. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Rebuild Database.

This scans storage and rebuilds its content index. Read the option label carefully: Reset PS5 is a different operation that deletes user data. Keep a backup before advanced troubleshooting.

5. Stop if the disc is mechanically stuck

Do not force another disc into an occupied slot or pull a trapped disc out. Sony provides an illustrated manual-eject procedure; use the instructions for your console or ask PlayStation Repairs for help. Manual ejection frees a disc, but does not diagnose why reading failed.

6. Choose the next step with the test results

Sony lists system-software reinstallation after the database step. It erases the console, so back up first and use the linked official procedure if you choose that route. Persistent multi-disc failures can instead be discussed with PlayStation Repairs before an erase.

Provide the console model, drive pairing status, discs tested and exact error. Distinguish a reading failure from a game that installs successfully and then crashes.

Frequently asked questions

Does a second working disc prove the drive is perfect?

No. It narrows the problem to a disc or a particular reading condition. Report the mixed results instead of declaring every part of the drive healthy.

Should I reset the PS5 first?

No. Establish which discs fail and check setup first; a reset removes user data and cannot repair physical damage.
