Roomba error 9: the bumper is stuck or jammed

Error 9 means the robot thinks it is permanently bumping into something. iRobot attributes it to a bumper that is compressed, jammed with debris or dislodged, rather than to an obstacle in the room.

Likely causes

  • The bumper compressed and not springing back out.
  • Debris packed into the gap behind the bumper, holding it in.
  • A bumper that has been knocked out of position or dislodged.
  • A dirty bumper sensor, which the 600 series chart names directly.
  • On the i Series, a constant bump reading rather than a single collision.

What the robot is actually reporting

The 600 series message is “Error nine (9). Tap Roomba's bumper to clean,” with the cause given as the bumper being compressed or the bumper sensor being dirty. The i Series message is “Tap the bumper to unstick, then press Clean,” with the cause recorded as a constant bump — the bumper jammed with debris or dislodged.

The word constant is the useful one. The robot expects the bumper to press in when it hits something and spring straight back out. A bumper that is pressed in and stays there reads as an endless collision, so the robot stops rather than drive into what it believes is a wall.

That is why this error appears with nothing in front of the robot at all. Nothing is blocking it; the bumper is simply not returning.

Tapping it, and what to listen for

iRobot's instruction is literal: tap the bumper. Press it in firmly several times and let it spring back on its own. Debris lodged in the travel behind the bumper often works free with nothing more than that, which is why it is the published first step rather than a placeholder.

Listen while you do it. A healthy bumper returns with an audible click each time. A bumper that moves in and comes back silently, or slowly, or not all the way, is the one causing this error — and that is easier to hear than to see.

If tapping does not free it, clear the gap between the bumper and the body. Fine grit and hair accumulate in that channel and can hold the bumper in far more effectively than their volume suggests.

Dislodged bumpers and silent failures

iRobot names a dislodged bumper as a cause on the i Series, and it is worth checking the bumper sits evenly all the way round rather than proud on one side. Robots get knocked, dropped and pulled out from under furniture, and a bumper that has shifted on its mounts will not travel correctly even when nothing is in its way.

There is a related failure worth knowing about because it produces no message at all. The 600 series chart lists a no-voice-message row whose cause is that the bumper is not registering obstacles, with the robot possibly stuck in one place — and its check is the same tap test. A robot that circles endlessly or bumps into things without stopping is failing in the opposite direction from error 9.

If the bumper moves freely and clicks properly and the error still appears, the sensor rather than the mechanism is at fault, and that is when to contact iRobot Customer Care with the robot and its serial number to hand.
