Second monitor not detected? Check Windows+P before anything else

Press Windows+P and check Extend is selected

Microsoft's first step is the one people skip: press the Windows key with P and make sure Extend is selected. A machine set to Duplicate or to PC screen only will show nothing on the second display while detecting it perfectly, and nothing about that looks like a setting. If Extend is already selected, go to Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays and press Detect, which forces Windows to look again rather than trusting what it found at boot.

Applies to: Windows 11 and Windows 10 with a second or third display over HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or a docking station, on desktops and laptops. The graphics-card output limit in section 5 applies to every platform; the menu paths are Windows.

Does Windows see it at all?

A second monitor that is not detected divides cleanly into two problems: Windows cannot see the display, or Windows sees it and is not using it. The Detect button and the Windows+P menu separate those in about ten seconds, and they matter because the fixes have nothing in common — one is a cable, port or driver question, the other is a display-mode setting. Establish which you have before changing anything else.

1. The display mode, which is not a fault

Microsoft's guidance for a second display that is connected but not showing anything is to press the Windows logo key with P and ensure Extend is selected. The four options behave very differently: PC screen only ignores the second display entirely, Duplicate shows the same image on both, Extend treats them as one large desktop, and Second screen only blanks the primary. Only Extend gives you the two-screen setup most people are after.

This setting changes itself more often than you would expect. Docking and undocking a laptop, a presentation that switched to Duplicate, a Windows update, or another user on the same machine can all leave it somewhere else — and it persists. The Windows+P menu is worth learning as a reflex because it takes two seconds and rules out the most common non-fault.

If a display is genuinely detected but shows nothing even on Extend, check where Windows has placed it. In Settings → System → Display, the two rectangles show the arrangement, and a display positioned somewhere odd can make windows appear to vanish. Drag the rectangles to match how the monitors physically sit on your desk, and use Identify to confirm which is which.

Duplicate mode also forces both displays to a resolution they can both manage, which can make a high-resolution second monitor look wrong rather than missing. Extend lets each run at its own native resolution.

2. Force Windows to look again

If the display is not listed at all, Microsoft's step is explicit: go to Start → Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays and select Detect. Windows enumerates displays at boot and when hardware changes, and a monitor connected while the machine was asleep, or one powered on after Windows started, can be missed entirely until something forces another look.

Power cycling the monitor itself is worth doing alongside. Switch the monitor off at its own button, wait a few seconds, and switch it back on — that triggers a fresh handshake over the cable. Doing it while Windows is running, rather than restarting everything, keeps the test quick and isolates which end was at fault.

Then rule out the physical layer with Microsoft's own sequence: make sure the cable connecting the PC to the external monitor is secure, try changing the cable to see whether a new one works, and if your system has more than one video output port, try plugging the monitor into another one — HDMI, VGA, DVI and DisplayPort are the typical ones. Change one thing at a time so a success identifies the cause.

3. Reset and update the graphics driver

Microsoft documents a keyboard shortcut for exactly this situation and it is not widely known: if your setup was working and has suddenly stopped, pressing the Windows logo key with Ctrl, Shift and B resets the graphics driver. The screen blanks briefly and the display stack restarts. It fixes a surprising share of displays that vanished for no apparent reason, and it costs nothing — no restart, no lost work.

If that does not help, update the driver properly. Microsoft's route is Device Manager: expand Display adapters, right-click your display adapter, select Update driver, then Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts. On a machine with both integrated and dedicated graphics there will be two adapters listed, and it is worth updating the one actually driving your displays.

Where the problem started immediately after a driver or Windows update, rolling back is the more targeted move. The Driver tab in the adapter's properties has Roll Back Driver, which restores the previous version and leaves everything else alone. Reinstalling a newer driver over a broken one often reproduces the same fault.

4. Your graphics card may not do two

Microsoft names this directly and it is the cause people least expect: if you can use one external monitor but have problems using more than one, it is possible that your display adapter cannot support more than one monitor, and you should contact its manufacturer to find out how many it supports. Having several physical ports does not mean all of them work simultaneously.

Laptops are where this bites hardest. Many can drive one external display comfortably and two only in specific combinations, or only through a particular port. The symptom is distinctive and worth recognising: each monitor works perfectly on its own, and the second one always fails regardless of which physical monitor or cable you use. If swapping which monitor is plugged into which port simply moves the problem to whichever is second, you have found an output limit rather than a fault.

Where the limit is the problem, a docking station or USB-C adapter is the documented answer — Microsoft suggests exactly that for devices with limited video output ports. Choose one carefully, though: a dock that merely splits a single output cannot exceed the underlying limit, whereas one with its own display controller can. The specification to look for is how many independent displays the dock supports, not how many sockets it has.

The test that identifies this: unplug the working monitor and plug the “broken” one into that same port. If it now works, both monitors and both cables are fine and you are hitting an output limit.

5. Docking stations, adapters and USB-C

Docks add a layer that fails in its own ways. A dock connected over USB-C needs the laptop's port to carry video at all — not every USB-C port does, and one that only carries data and power will run the dock's USB devices while never producing a display. Check the port for a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol beside it, and try the dock on a different port if the machine has more than one.

Adapters are a common weak point, particularly passive ones. An HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapter is not the same thing as a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter, and passive adapters only work in one direction; the wrong one produces nothing at all while looking correct. Where an adapter is involved, connecting the monitor directly to the computer for a test removes it as a variable in one step.

Dock firmware is worth checking when several displays behave oddly at once, since manufacturers ship updates that specifically address multi-display handling. And a dock that is underpowered — running from a laptop's own port rather than its supplied power adapter — will drop displays under load in a way that reads as a cable fault.

6. Narrowing it down, and what to tell support

Two swaps settle most remaining cases. Swap which monitor is connected to which port: if the fault stays with one physical monitor, that monitor or its cable is at fault; if it stays with one port, the port or the adapter is. And connect the second monitor on its own, with the first unplugged — a monitor that works alone and never as the second is an output limit rather than a fault.

Test the monitor on another computer if you can. Microsoft lists this among its steps and it is decisive: a monitor that works elsewhere has cleared itself entirely, which moves the whole investigation back to your machine's ports, drivers and limits.

When you contact support, describe the state rather than the symptom. Say whether Windows lists the display at all, whether Detect finds it, what Windows+P is set to, whether the monitor works when connected alone to the same port, whether a second cable and a different port behaved the same, and whether a dock or adapter is involved. Those answers separate a display-mode setting from a cable from a driver from a graphics card that cannot drive another display.
