Sony WH-1000XM5 not charging: check the USB charging light

Read the orange indicator beside USB-C, rather than the power-button light. Sony documents separate temperature and charging faults, plus computer-sleep and cable limitations.

The short version

  1. 01Read the charging indicator beside USB-C rather than the light beside the power button.
  2. 02Connect the supplied USB-C cable directly to a suitable adapter or awake computer.
  3. 03Wait for the charging indicator if the headphones have been unused for a long time.
  4. 04Retry within the documented 5–35°C charging temperature range when temperature is abnormal.
  5. 05Disconnect USB power before testing power-on, Bluetooth or playback.
  6. 06Contact Sony if abnormal charging or greatly reduced battery runtime persists.

Start here

Read the USB-C charging indicator

The USB-C charging light is steady orange while charging and turns off at completion. Double orange flashes indicate abnormal temperature; slow orange flashing indicates abnormal charging. A sleeping computer or hub also changes the power path.

Applies to: WH-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM5SA over-ear headphones; not WF-1000XM5 earbuds.

Match the failure you can observe

Choose the matching check below, then compare the result before moving to the next repair.

Use the USB-C charging indicator

Sony's manual separates the USB charging light from the indicator beside the power button. Steady orange means charging; the USB light turns off when complete. Double orange flashes mean abnormal temperature, while slow orange flashing means abnormal charging.

Use the supplied cable and direct power

Sony specifies its supplied cable and an adapter capable of at least 1.5 A. Lower current increases charging time. A full empty-to-full charge takes about 3.5 hours under its stated conditions. Our recommendation is to record the adapter rating before blaming slow charging on the battery.

Retry in the documented temperature range

Sony specifies 5–35°C for charging. After long storage, the indicator can take a while to appear. Retry under suitable conditions and contact Sony if the abnormal indication persists; the light alone does not identify a battery part to replace.

An asleep computer cannot charge the headphones

Keep the computer on and connect directly, avoiding a USB hub. Sony says standby or hibernation prevents charging. Our recommendation is to compare an awake computer or suitable wall adapter before changing permanent sleep settings.

Disconnect USB before testing playback

Sony says power-on, Bluetooth pairing and playback are unavailable while USB power is connected. Disconnect after charging before testing operation. Persistent charging trouble or a major loss of battery runtime needs Sony support.

Frequently asked questions

Can WH-1000XM5 play while connected to USB power?

Sony says power-on, Bluetooth operation and playback are unavailable while the USB charging connection is present. Disconnect it before testing playback.

Does an unlit charging indicator always mean no power?

No. It turns off when charging is complete and may take time to appear after long storage. Compare the cable, power source and charging conditions.
