Open the calibration screen and take your hands off
Go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks, select the affected stick, and then let go of the controller entirely. The screen shows the stick's live input. If the marker drifts on its own with nothing touching it, you have confirmed hardware drift rather than a game problem — and Nintendo's position is that a stick which cannot be calibrated needs servicing. If the marker sits still, the fault is in the game or its settings, not the Joy-Con.
Applies to: Joy-Con controllers for Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite, plus the Pro Controller, which drifts the same way and is diagnosed identically. The Lite's sticks are built into the console, which changes what gets sent for repair.
Where does the drift show up?
Stick drift is unusual among hardware faults because the console can prove it for you. Nintendo calls it responsiveness syndrome, and its own guidance puts calibration first for a reason: it separates a worn stick module from the several software causes that imitate one — in-game tilt controls, a stale controller firmware, or a third-party grip pressing on the stick. Run the calibration test before buying anything or opening anything.

Nintendo's guidance is to calibrate the control sticks and verify the stick configuration is set to standard inputs before troubleshooting anything else, and the calibration screen doubles as the best test you have. Go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks, choose the affected stick, then put the controller down and watch. The display reflects live stick position, so any movement while nothing is touching it is drift you can see rather than infer.
Run the calibration itself while you are there: tilt the stick fully in a single direction and hold it for a few seconds, following the prompts. Calibration re-establishes where the stick thinks its centre and extremes are, and it genuinely resolves mild cases — a stick whose neutral point has wandered slightly is corrected by telling the console where neutral now is.
The result is your diagnosis. Drift that disappears after calibration was a centring problem and may stay fixed. Drift that returns within hours or days is a worn stick module, and each calibration will buy less time than the last. A marker that sits perfectly still with hands off means the Joy-Con is behaving and the problem is in the software — go to section 3.
Test with the Joy-Con detached from the console and again attached. A stick that behaves detached but drifts when attached points at the rail connection rather than the stick, which is a different repair.
2. Remove anything you have added
Nintendo's list includes a step that sounds trivial and is not: remove any skins or covers from the problematic Joy-Con before calibrating. Silicone grips, thumbstick caps and protective shells are the most common cause of drift that appeared suddenly on a controller that was fine the week before. A cover that sits slightly proud presses on the stick's collar and holds it fractionally off centre, and the console reads that as constant input.
Thumbstick caps deserve particular suspicion. They add height and leverage, and a cap that is a poor fit can bind against the housing at the edge of its travel. Take them off, recalibrate, and test — if the drift is gone, you have your answer and it costs nothing.
Dust and debris under the stick's rubber skirt are the other physical cause, and they produce drift that comes and goes rather than sitting constant. The stick module draws air in as it moves and grit collects on the contact surfaces inside. Working the stick in full circles a few dozen times sometimes redistributes it enough to help temporarily, which is diagnostically useful — a fault that responds to that is contamination rather than wear, though the improvement rarely lasts.
3. The causes that imitate drift
If the calibration screen is steady, the Joy-Con is fine and something else is moving your character. Nintendo names the most common culprit directly: check whether in-game tilt controls are activated, since motion controls can make a stick appear unresponsive or produce movement you did not ask for. A game with gyro aiming enabled reads the controller's angle, so a controller resting at a tilt on the sofa produces continuous drift that follows you between sessions and looks exactly like hardware.
Nintendo also lists checking for software updates for the affected game, which is worth doing when the problem is confined to one title. A fault that appears in one game and nowhere else is almost never the controller — test in a menu, or in a different game, before spending anything.
Then rule out the two system-level causes on Nintendo's list. Confirm the console has the latest system update, and confirm the Joy-Con have the latest controller firmware installed — controller firmware updates install through the console and are easy to have missed. Nintendo also suggests verifying with the Joy-Con attached that they register correctly as attached on the Controllers screen from the HOME menu, which catches a connection fault presenting as an input fault.
Test in the console’s own menus rather than in a game where you can. The HOME menu and the calibration screen have no tilt controls, no dead zone tuning and no aim assist, so they give you a reading nothing else is influencing.
4. When calibration won’t take
Nintendo's position here is unambiguous and worth quoting as your decision point: if the control sticks cannot be calibrated, the non-working Joy-Con controller will need to be serviced. There is no further home fix in Nintendo's own sequence. A stick module whose potentiometers or contacts have worn past the range calibration can correct is a mechanical failure, and repeated recalibration only delays the same conclusion.
One instruction in that guidance saves people a lot of trouble: do not send in the console. Only the affected Joy-Con needs to go, and sending the whole system means being without it for the entire repair. The exception is a Switch Lite, whose sticks are part of the console itself — on that model the console is what gets serviced, because there is nothing detachable to send.
Nintendo provides an online service request process for this, available in the U.S. and Canada, and directs users elsewhere to their nearest Authorized Service Center. Start the request from Nintendo's own support site rather than a third-party repairer if the controller may still be covered, because the coverage position on this specific fault is unusually good.
5. In the UK and Europe, this repair is free
This is the single most valuable thing to know about Joy-Con drift and it is routinely missed. For users in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, Nintendo states that it will not charge for the repair of responsiveness syndrome irrespective of whether it was caused by a defect or by wear and tear.
The scope of that is broader than a normal warranty. Nintendo's wording is that repairs relating to control sticks for this syndrome are conducted at no charge by official Nintendo repair centres even if the syndrome is caused by wear and tear, and even if the 24-month manufacturer's warranty has expired. An out-of-warranty Joy-Con with drift is still covered in those regions, which means paying for a replacement pair is usually unnecessary.
Check your own region's Nintendo support pages for the current position before assuming either way, since this is a policy rather than a technical fact and policies change. But if you are in the UK or the EEA and about to buy replacement Joy-Con because a pair has drifted, check the repair route first — it is a genuinely different outcome from what most advice online assumes.
The policy covers the control stick responsiveness fault specifically, not unrelated damage. A Joy-Con with a cracked shell or liquid damage is a different conversation.
6. Living with it, and what to tell support
There are two honest mitigations while you wait for a repair. Recalibrating buys time on a mildly worn stick, and it takes under a minute once you know where the menu is. And because Joy-Con are paired individually, a spare left or right can be swapped in on its own — you do not need a matching pair, which makes a single second-hand Joy-Con a cheaper stopgap than a new set.
Prevention is limited but not nothing. Keep the console and controllers out of dusty environments and away from food, avoid third-party thumbstick caps that do not fit properly, and store the Switch docked or in a case rather than loose in a bag where the sticks are pressed against something. None of this stops the underlying wear, which is why the repair policy in section 5 matters more than any habit.
When you contact Nintendo, give them the calibration result — it is the evidence that matters. Say whether the calibration screen shows movement with the controller untouched, whether calibration completed or failed, whether the drift happens in the HOME menu as well as in games, whether it persists with all skins and stick caps removed, and whether it affects one Joy-Con or both. Those five answers establish it as the fault the repair policy covers rather than a support conversation about game settings.
