Compare the TV's own picture with the external source
Run the built-in picture test where available. Flicker in that test points toward the TV; a clean test directs attention to the source and connection. Brightness pulsing with scene changes can also come from picture processing. A brief blank screen when playback starts deserves a separate format-switching check.

When does the picture flicker?
Observe whether the image disappears, changes brightness or flashes only on one input. Test long enough to reproduce the symptom; one clean moment cannot rule out an intermittent fault.

On many recent Samsung models, open All Settings, Support, Device Care, Self Diagnosis, Picture Test. Older models may put Self Diagnosis directly under Support. Follow the prompts and note whether the flicker appears in the test image. Samsung directs persistent test-image flicker to service.
2. Compare one connection at a time
Reseat the source cable, then test another cable, input and source device separately. Select the matching input after moving ports. Sony's picture troubleshooting uses these comparisons to distinguish a source problem from a TV problem. Record the combination that reproduces the flicker.
3. Test automatic brightness and contrast
Samsung's energy-saving features can change brightness as room lighting or scenes change. Temporarily disable the relevant automatic brightness setting to compare the same scene.
For supported Sony models, try Custom picture mode or disable Black adjust and Advanced contrast enhancer under the Brightness settings. Sony identifies contrast processing as a possible cause of rapid brightness flicker. Restore any setting that makes no useful difference.
4. Recognise a video-format transition
Apple documents temporary blanking or flicker when Apple TV matches a programme's dynamic range or frame rate. If the interruption happens only when playback begins or ends, temporarily turn off Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate under Settings, Video and Audio, Match Content. Compare that transition again.
5. Reset picture settings before erasing the TV
If picture adjustments accumulated over time, photograph your settings first. Samsung provides Picture, Expert Settings, Reset Picture on supported models. This is a picture-settings reset; do not confuse it with the full TV reset. Check the manufacturer's software update for your model and keep power connected during installation.
6. Escalate a reproducible internal-picture fault
If the TV's own test still flickers, collect the model code, software version and test results for support. A clean test plus a failing external source needs further source checks, especially when the fault is intermittent. These observations do not identify a particular board or panel part for replacement.

No. The pattern can involve a source connection, automatic brightness or a format transition. An internal picture test helps narrow the possibilities before service.
What if the screen stays black but sound continues?
