TV won’t connect to Wi-Fi? A phone hotspot settles it in a minute

Fix a TV that won’t join Wi-Fi: a phone hotspot proves whether the TV’s radio works, and the built-in network test names the failing step. Covers hidden and 5 GHz networks, password entry, DNS, signal strength and resets.

Connect the TV to your phone’s hotspot

Turn on your phone’s mobile hotspot and connect the TV to that instead of your home network. It is the fastest way to settle the only question that matters: if the TV joins the hotspot, the TV’s Wi-Fi hardware works and your router or ISP is the problem. If it cannot join the hotspot either, the fault is in the television. LG recommends exactly this test, and it saves you working through router settings for a TV that was never going to connect to anything.

Applies to: Smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Vizio, Philips and Panasonic. Menu paths differ by brand and model year; the common ones are named below. Some 2018 Samsung models cannot use 5 GHz networks at all — that exception is covered in section 3.

Where does it fail?

A TV that won’t connect to Wi-Fi fails at one of four points, and they look almost identical from the sofa: it can’t see the network, it sees it but rejects the password, it joins but has no internet, or it connects and drops later. Every major brand builds a network test that reports which of those happened, and there is a hotspot test that isolates the TV from your router entirely. Run both before changing anything, and the rest of this is short.

1. Run the TV’s network test and the hotspot test

Start with the built-in network test, because it tells you which hop failed rather than that something did. On Samsung, go to All Settings → Connection → Network → Network Status; the test reports errors specifically, including an incorrect password or a failed MAC address. Sony's BRAVIA sets have an equivalent network diagnosis that shows where the connection is breaking down. The result splits the problem into the four cases this guide is organised around: can't see the network, can't authenticate, no internet after connecting, or unstable.

Then run the hotspot test, which is the more decisive of the two. Turn on your phone's mobile hotspot and try connecting the TV to it. LG's guidance names this directly: if the TV connects to the hotspot successfully, the TV is working properly and the issue lies with your router or ISP. If it will not join the hotspot either, you have narrowed the fault to the television and can stop investigating your network.

One check to run alongside: confirm other devices can reach the same network. LG's first step is to see whether a phone or laptop connects, because if nothing can, the router or the ISP is at fault and the TV is an innocent party. Sony makes the same point — check your internet works on another device and that the router's lights look normal before troubleshooting the TV at all.

2. If the network isn’t in the list at all

A network missing from the TV's list is usually a band problem rather than a fault. Most routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, often under the same name, and a TV that cannot use 5 GHz simply will not display it. Samsung documents this exception explicitly: certain 2018 models — the NU6, NU71, NU72 and NU73 series — support only 2.4 GHz networks and cannot detect or connect to a 5 GHz network at all. If your TV is one of those, the 5 GHz network is invisible by design and no amount of rescanning will surface it.

The other common cause is a hidden network. If your router has SSID broadcast disabled, the TV will not list it and you have to add it manually, entering the exact name and security type by hand. Both Samsung and Sony provide a manual-entry option in the wireless setup screen for this.

If neither applies, check the router is broadcasting on a channel and width the TV supports, and that any guest network or band-steering feature is not hiding it. Splitting the two bands into separately named networks — for example appending 2.4 and 5 to the names — is a permanent fix that makes this class of problem visible instead of mysterious, and it also stops the TV being steered onto a band it handles badly.

A TV that lists no networks whatsoever, not even your neighbours’, is a different symptom. That points at the TV’s own Wi-Fi radio, and Samsung’s guidance at that point is to request service.

3. If it rejects the password

Sony's guidance is blunt about this and worth repeating: most connection failures happen because the password was entered incorrectly, and for a security key upper case and lower case are distinguished. On-screen keyboards make this far worse than it sounds — an autocapitalised first letter, a confusion between the digit 0 and the letter O, or between 1, l and I, is the single most common reason a correct-looking password fails.

Type it somewhere you can see it before trusting it. Most TVs offer a show-password checkbox on the entry screen; use it. If the key is the long random string printed on the router, check it against the label rather than from memory, and be aware that the label password is void if anyone has ever changed it in the router's settings.

If the password is definitely right and it still fails, forget the network and add it again rather than retrying. On Sony, Settings → Network & Internet → select your Wi-Fi → Forget, then reconnect. That clears a stored profile holding an old key, which is a common leftover after a router or ISP change and produces exactly this symptom. A failed MAC address error in Samsung's network test is a different matter — Samsung's documented response to that one is a factory reset, under All Settings → General & Privacy → Reset, with a default PIN of 0000.

4. If it connects but nothing loads

A TV showing as connected while apps fail has completed the Wi-Fi association and failed at the internet stage, which is a much narrower problem. The network test will normally show the connection to the router succeeding and the step beyond it failing. That points at DNS, at the router, or at the ISP — not at the Wi-Fi link.

DNS is the usual culprit and the easiest to test. Samsung's documented fix is to set it manually: All Settings → Connection → Network → Network Status → IP Settings, then DNS Setting → Enter Manually, and enter 8.8.8.8 for Google's public DNS. If apps start working immediately after that change, your router's DNS was the problem, and it is worth fixing at the router so every device benefits rather than just the TV.

If DNS doesn't do it, restart the network hardware in the right order. LG's procedure is to unplug the modem for about 10 seconds and plug it back in, then do the same for the router. Wait for the router to come fully back — a couple of minutes — before testing the TV. Sony's version is to leave the router unplugged for a full minute. Restarting the TV as well, after the router is up, clears a stale connection state on the TV's side.

If only certain apps fail while others work, this isn’t a network fault at all. That’s an app or a service outage, and the TV’s connection is fine — check whether the service is down before changing any settings.

5. If it connects and then drops

Intermittent connections are almost always signal strength, and there is a good test for it. Samsung's suggestion is to connect a phone to your home network, hold it next to the TV, and look at the bars: if the phone shows only one or two bars in that spot, or cannot see the network there at all, the signal is too weak for the TV. That is a measurement rather than a guess, and it takes seconds.

TVs are harder to reach than phones because of where they sit. LG recommends moving the router within about 30 feet of the TV, and notes that walls and electronic devices between them make it worse. Sony adds the practical detail that matters most: keep the router off the floor, ideally at or above waist height, away from thick walls and metal objects, and away from microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors and Bluetooth speakers. A wall-mounted TV with a metal bracket and the router in a cupboard below is a genuinely difficult radio path.

If the TV sits far from the router, changing the band is often more effective than moving furniture. LG's suggestion for connection problems is to try the 2.4 GHz network rather than 5 GHz — 2.4 GHz is slower but travels further and through walls better, and streaming needs far less bandwidth than people assume. Sony's advice is to try switching between the two and see which holds. Where the run is genuinely long, an Ethernet cable or a powerline adapter removes the problem entirely, and most TVs have an Ethernet port.

6. Resets, firmware, and what to tell support

Work up through the resets rather than starting at the top. A network reset clears only the stored network settings and is the right first step — on Samsung it is All Settings → Connection → Network → Reset Network. A full power cycle comes next: unplug the TV at the wall rather than using standby, since standby keeps the network stack alive along with the state you are trying to clear.

A factory reset is the last software step, and it clears every setting and sign-in on the TV. Samsung does document it as the response to a MAC address failure specifically, at All Settings → General & Privacy → Reset with a default PIN of 0000, but it will not repair a failed Wi-Fi radio and it costs you every app login. Check for a firmware update before going that far — network stack bugs are a normal category of fix in TV firmware, though updating a TV that cannot reach the internet may mean a USB stick and a download from the manufacturer's site.

When you contact support, lead with the hotspot result, because it is the piece of evidence that decides whether this is a repair. Tell them whether the TV connected to a phone hotspot, what the built-in network test reported, whether other devices work on the same network in the same room, whether the network appears in the TV's list at all, and whether a network reset changed anything. Those five answers separate a router problem from a weak signal from a failed Wi-Fi module.
