Webcam microphone not working? Record yourself in Windows first

Fix a webcam microphone nobody can hear: Windows records a sample and plays it back, which splits the fault in two. Covers why camera permission does not cover the microphone, input device selection, levels and exclusive mode.

Record yourself in Windows before you open the meeting

Windows has a microphone test that records a sample and plays it back: Settings → System → Sound, choose your microphone under Input, open its properties, then Start test, speak normally, Stop test and Play. If you hear yourself, the microphone, its driver and Windows are all fine and the fault is the app or its permission. If the blue input bar never moves, the problem is below the application layer — the wrong input device, a muted level, or a driver.

Applies to: USB webcams with built-in microphones and laptop internal microphones on Windows 11 and Windows 10, used in Teams, Zoom, Meet, Discord and OBS. Menu paths are given for Windows 11 with Windows 10 noted where it differs.

Does the input bar move?

A webcam microphone that nobody can hear is rarely a broken microphone. Windows keeps microphone permissions in an entirely separate section from camera permissions, so a webcam whose video works perfectly can be denied audio without any indication — and that catches people who assume one permission covers the device. The built-in test cuts past all of it by recording and replaying your own voice.

1. The Windows microphone test, which records you

Windows will record a sample and play it back, which is a stronger test than watching a meter. Go to Settings → System → Sound, and under Input select the microphone you want to test, then choose the arrow to the right of the device to open its properties page. Under Input settings, select Start test and speak normally, then Stop test and choose Play to hear your recorded sample.

Hearing yourself is decisive. It proves the microphone works, the driver works, Windows has selected it, and the level is adequate — the entire capture chain. Anything still wrong is in the application you were trying to use or the permission it has, which is section 3.

Watch the blue bar while you speak as well. Microsoft's simpler check is that the bar rises and falls as you speak into the microphone, and if it is moving, the microphone is working properly. A bar that never moves means Windows is receiving nothing from the selected device, which points at the device selection or the level rather than at any app.

Test in Windows rather than in your meeting app throughout. The meeting app adds its own device selection, its own mute, and its own permission — three more things that can be wrong.

2. Windows may be listening to a different microphone

Most machines have more than one microphone, and the one Windows has chosen is not necessarily the one you are speaking into. A laptop has an internal array, a webcam adds another, a headset adds a third, and virtual audio devices from streaming software add more. Windows picks a default and it does not always change when you plug something in.

Set it explicitly: Settings → System → Sound, then under Input, go to Choose a device for speaking or recording and select the one you want. Do this before adjusting anything else, because a level or a driver change applied to the wrong device achieves nothing and leaves you more confused than when you started.

Then confirm the physical connection on a USB webcam. Plug it directly into the computer rather than through a hub, a monitor or a dock, and try a different port. A webcam whose video works over a marginal connection can still drop audio, because the two are separate streams over the same link and audio is the one that suffers first.

3. Microphone permission is separate from camera permission

This is the point people miss when a webcam's video works and its audio does not: Windows treats camera and microphone as two independent permissions with two separate settings pages. Granting an app camera access does nothing for its microphone access, so a video call can show your face perfectly while transmitting silence.

Check all of it in one place: Settings → Privacy & security, then under App permissions select Microphone. Make sure both Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone are on. Then, if the problem is with a specific app, scroll down under Let apps access your microphone and confirm the toggle next to that app is on too.

The same catch applies here as with the camera: only apps installed from the Microsoft Store appear in that per-app list. Desktop applications — Zoom, Chrome, Discord, OBS, the desktop version of Teams — are governed collectively by the desktop apps setting further down the page. If Windows records you fine and every meeting app fails at once, that single toggle is the first thing to check.

4. Levels, boost and being too quiet

Being faint is a different fault from being silent, and it has its own controls. On the Levels tab of the microphone's properties, adjust the Microphone and Microphone Boost sliders, then speak while checking the test to make sure the settings work — if the line moves from left to right, the microphone is working. A level left at zero produces exactly the same silence as a broken device.

Use boost sparingly. It amplifies everything, including room noise and the hiss of a cheap webcam microphone, so a large boost trades intelligibility for volume. Raising the main level first and only adding boost if you are still quiet gives a better result than the reverse.

Position matters more with webcam microphones than with headsets, because the microphone is a metre away on top of a monitor rather than beside your mouth. A webcam mic will always sound more distant and pick up more room, and no amount of boost changes that geometry — if quality rather than volume is the complaint, a headset or a separate microphone is the actual answer.

5. When Windows hears you and the app does not

A successful Windows test and a silent meeting means the hardware and permissions are fine, and the application is the variable. Start with its own device selection: most conferencing apps have a microphone dropdown in their settings that is entirely separate from the Windows default, and on a machine with several inputs it is often pointed at the wrong one.

Check the app's own mute, which is separate again. Video apps have a mute button, a keyboard shortcut, and sometimes a push-to-talk mode, and any of them will silence you while everything else looks correct. Microsoft publishes a dedicated article for a microphone not working in Teams specifically, and the shape of the advice is the same across apps.

In a browser, the permission is per-site rather than per-app and lives separately from Windows. A meeting site that was denied the microphone once stays denied silently — check the padlock or microphone icon in the address bar for that site and allow it, then reload the page. Restart a desktop app after any permission change, since most enumerate devices at startup and will not notice a permission granted while they are running.

6. Drivers, exclusive mode, and what to tell support

If Windows itself cannot hear the microphone, work on the device. In Device Manager, look under Audio inputs and outputs for the microphone; if it is missing, use Action and Scan for hardware changes, which often finds a USB webcam connected while the machine was asleep. A device with a warning triangle has a driver problem rather than a connection one, and rolling the driver back is the targeted fix if the fault began after an update.

One setting worth knowing about causes a distinctive symptom: exclusive mode lets a single application take complete control of an audio device, locking every other application out. It lives in the device's properties under the Advanced tab, as an option allowing applications to take exclusive control. Turning it off resolves the case where one app works and every other one is silent while the device is in use.

When you contact support, lead with the Windows test result. Say whether the Windows microphone test records and plays back your voice, whether the input bar moves as you speak, which input device is selected, whether all three microphone privacy switches are on including desktop apps, and whether the microphone fails in every application or just one. Those five answers separate a device selection from a permission from a level from a driver.
