The short version
- 01Confirm the console and TV are on, with the TV set to the connected HDMI input.
- 02Check the console's HDMI output and compare another TV port, cable or screen.
- 03Compare a direct TV connection if an audio-video receiver is in the path.
- 04Hold the console Power button for about ten seconds, then turn the console on again.
- 05Use Xbox's model-specific low-resolution startup buttons if the normal HDMI checks fail.
- 06Restore a compatible display resolution or follow Xbox's update and repair route if startup still fails.
Likely causes
- The TV input, HDMI port, cable or receiver path does not carry the console's output.
- A display setting is incompatible with the connected screen.
- An update or console fault prevents startup video.
Start with the input and video path
Xbox checks the TV input, securely connected HDMI output, another TV port, another cable and another screen. Our additional comparison is a direct console-to-TV connection when a receiver is present. Record whether the TV has no input signal or the console produced a picture before going black.
If a receiver is involved, check its startup sequence
Xbox's receiver sequence powers the TV first, then the fully started receiver, then the console. Its follow-up checks switch the receiver's input away and back, then restart the receiver. Where the dashboard is available, the documented connection setting is TV & display options > Video fidelity & overscan > Display > HDMI.
Use the buttons documented for your console
Eject any disc, then hold the console Power button for ten seconds to shut down. On the documented disc-drive models, hold Power and Eject until the second startup beep, about ten seconds after the first. Xbox Series S and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition instead use the console Xbox/Power button and Pair. For another button layout, check that model's current instructions before proceeding.
This starts the documented models at 640 × 480. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options and choose a compatible resolution. This is a display-settings recovery procedure, not a factory reset.
Keep update failures separate from the HDMI test
Xbox directs a blank screen immediately after a system update to its system-update troubleshooting route. Persistent failures after the applicable checks can require service. Our recommendation is to provide the model, startup stage and cable/receiver comparisons before undertaking deeper console recovery.
