Bluetooth headphones sound muffled: check microphone use

Compare music before and during microphone use. Mac Bluetooth audio changes mode during calls; supported Windows 11 LE Audio systems have separate controls for playback while the microphone is active.

The short version

  1. 01Compare the same music with calling apps closed and with the headset microphone active.
  2. 02On Mac, quit apps using the headset microphone and close the Sound settings window.
  3. 03In Mac Control Center > Sound, select internal speakers, then reselect the Bluetooth headphones.
  4. 04On Windows, verify that both the PC and headphones support Bluetooth LE Audio.
  5. 05On a supported Windows system, check the headphone's Format when microphone is active control.
  6. 06Update supported Windows and manufacturer drivers, or use the available mono mode when stereo causes glitches.

Likely causes

  • Using the headset microphone changes the Bluetooth audio mode on Mac.
  • Windows stereo playback during microphone use requires compatible LE Audio hardware, drivers and software.

Compare music with and without the microphone

Our first test is the same music before and during a call. Apple's Mac guidance explains that using a Bluetooth headset microphone changes the audio mode and reduces playback quality. This reference concerns that audible change, rather than physical dirt or a silent output.

Mac: release the microphone and reselect the output

Quit apps using the headset microphone and close any open Sound settings window. If quality stays reduced, use Control Center > Sound to select the internal speakers, then select the headphones again.

Windows: check support before looking for stereo call mode

Microsoft's stereo-during-microphone feature requires Windows 11 24H2 or later, compatible factory-integrated LE Audio hardware, manufacturer drivers and an LE Audio headset. Update Windows and drivers first. In the device's Sound output settings, expand Format and check Format when microphone is active. A missing control can mean the system lacks support; mono can improve compatibility when stereo glitches.
