The short version
- 01Confirm whether the running game is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- 02Use Java's keyboard and mouse controls or a compatible Bedrock installation for native controller input.
- 03Match the controller model to Minecraft's published platform compatibility list.
- 04On Windows, check the documented Xbox controller models before changing Minecraft settings.
- 05Compare controller input outside Minecraft to separate platform pairing from the game.
- 06Use the controller platform's connection guide or Minecraft support with the edition and device details.
Likely causes
- Java Edition is being used with a controller without native controller support.
- The controller is not a documented match for the platform.
- The controller connection fails outside Minecraft as well.
Check the edition before repairing the controller
Minecraft's compatibility article states that Java Edition is intended for keyboard and mouse and does not inherently support gamepads. Bedrock supports controller input. Our first check is the edition actually running; a working controller does not add native controller support to Java.
Match the controller to the platform list
For Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series, Minecraft lists Xbox Wireless, Elite Series 2 and Adaptive controllers. Its other platform rows name DualShock 4/DualSense on PlayStation, Joy-Con pairs/Pro Controllers on Switch, Android or Fire OS controllers, and Made for iPhone controllers on Apple devices. Models not listed may not be compatible.
Separate a platform connection from a game failure
Our next comparison tests the controller outside Minecraft. If input is absent there too, follow the platform's controller-connection procedure, including the related Xbox guide where applicable. If a listed controller works elsewhere in Bedrock's supported platform, retain the edition, controller model and test result for Minecraft support.
