Turn the printer off, unplug it from the wall socket — not a switched strip — wait about 60 seconds, then plug it back in. A jam error is a latched state, and it survives being switched off at the button. If the error clears and stays gone, there was never anything in there: the printer had simply not been told the jam was resolved. If it comes straight back, something physical is still holding a sensor, and the rest of this guide is about finding it.

What kind of phantom jam?

That happens because of a torn fragment you can't see, a stuck flag, or a latched error state that a proper power cycle clears. Those three have very different fixes, so work through them in order.

Clean the rollers1. Reset the latched error properly
A jam error is a state the printer holds until it is satisfied the path is clear, and on many models it persists through a normal power-off because the machine keeps power to its logic while plugged in. HP's own guidance for a paper jam error with nothing visible is to reset the printer: disconnect the power cord, wait around 60 seconds, and reconnect it. The wait matters — it is what allows the internal state to drain rather than being restored on the next boot.
Do it from the wall socket rather than a switched extension lead, and if the printer has a separate power brick, unplug at the printer end too. While it is off, open and close the main cover and any rear access door firmly. Brother's first remedy for a persistent jam message is simply to open and close the scanner cover, because a cover that is not fully latched reads to the machine as an open interlock and can hold the error.
If the message clears on power-up and does not return when you print, you are done — it was a latched state. If it returns immediately, or comes back on the first sheet, something physical is involved and the next three sections are how to find it. Note which of those happened before continuing; it decides how much dismantling is worth doing.
Turning the printer off at its own button is not enough on most models. If you only ever pressed the power button, do the full unplug before concluding the error is real.
2. Find the fragment — it isn’t where the paper was
If you pulled a jam and the message stayed, a piece almost certainly tore off. Paper tears along the leading edge and the corners, and the fragment stays behind exactly where you cannot see it. Brother is explicit that a small piece of paper stuck inside the machine is the cause of a jam error that persists after clearing, and that fragments collect in the corners and edges of the interior rather than in the obvious paper path.
Check every access point, not just the one where you found the paper. That means the input tray removed entirely so you can look into the empty cavity, the rear access door or duplexer unit taken off, and the top cover opened so you can see the carriage path. HP's guidance is that jams occur in multiple areas and that if you cannot find it in one area you should continue to the next until it is located. Use a torch and look along the edges rather than straight down.
On inkjets, move the print head out of the way and look underneath it. Brother's procedure is to hold Stop/Exit until the head moves to the centre, then move it by hand to reach scraps beneath it — use tweezers, and take care not to touch the internal components or the encoder strip while you are in there. Pull any fragment out in the direction the paper normally travels where you can, since pulling backwards against the rollers is what tears it in the first place.
Work with the printer unplugged whenever your hands are inside it, and never pull paper out with the machine powered and a head parked mid-path — the carriage can move without warning.
3. The sensor flag nobody looks at
This is the part that turns an unfixable phantom jam into a two-minute repair. Printers do not see paper optically along most of the path; they use small pivoting plastic levers — variously called sensor flags, actuators, or on Brother machines the PE actuator — that paper deflects as it passes. A flag that is bent, sticky with dust, or knocked out of position while someone was clearing a jam stays in the tripped position, and the printer reports a jam forever with a completely empty paper path.
Brother names a missing or damaged PE actuator directly as a cause of a persistent Paper Jam message, alongside paper scraps in the print head path and a jam clear cover that is not installed properly. Look for these small levers where paper enters the feed area and at the exit, and compare left to right where there is a pair — an asymmetry is the giveaway. They should flick back under their own spring tension when you nudge them and settle in the same rest position.
A flag that moves freely and returns is not your fault. A flag that stays where you push it, feels gritty, or sits visibly differently from its twin is. Dust and paper fibre are the usual cause and a dry cotton bud clears it; a bent flag can sometimes be eased straight, but a snapped one needs a service visit. Also confirm any jam clear cover or duplexer is seated fully and latched — a partly-fitted one leaves a flag unsupported and produces exactly this symptom.
4. Rollers, dust and paper that won’t feed
If the printer reports jams on real print jobs rather than at idle, the pickup rollers are the first suspect. HP notes that dust, paper fibre and other debris on the paper feed rollers cause jams, and the mechanism is straightforward: a roller that has lost its grip either fails to pick a sheet at all or picks it late, and a sheet arriving late past a sensor is reported as a jam by timing rather than by obstruction.
Clean them with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, rotating each roller as you go so you clean the whole circumference, and let them dry fully before printing. Rollers that look shiny rather than matte have glazed with age — cleaning buys some time, but a glazed roller is a wear part and replacement kits exist for most models. Do not use solvents or alcohol unless your manual specifically calls for it, since some roller compounds harden with it.
Then rule out the paper itself, because it causes more repeat jams than any component. Fan the stack before loading it, don't mix weights or sizes in one tray, keep the stack below the fill line, and set the guides against the paper without pinching it. Paper that has absorbed humidity curls and misfeeds — a ream that has sat open in a damp room genuinely does jam more, and a fresh pack is a legitimate diagnostic step.
5. Check the document feeder separately
On an all-in-one, the automatic document feeder above the scanner glass is a second, entirely separate paper path with its own rollers and its own sensors. It produces its own jam messages, and because people think of the printer as the part that jams, an ADF fault sends them hunting through the print path for a sheet that was never there.
Open the ADF cover — usually a flap on the top of the lid, released by a tab at the front — and look for a fragment or a sheet held in the rollers. The same rules apply: pull in the direction of travel, look into the corners, and check the small flags. The ADF's rollers pick up dust faster than the print path because documents shed more than fresh paper does.
The other one worth checking on an inkjet is the disc or CD tray guide where the model has one. Brother's procedure includes opening the Disc Guide and checking that area for fragments, and even suggests inserting the disc tray to mechanically push out paper that has lodged where fingers cannot reach. It is an unusual place to find paper and exactly why it goes unfound.
6. When it’s the machine, and what to tell support
There is a real endpoint to this. If a full 60-second power cycle does not clear the error, every access point has been checked with a torch, no fragment is present, the flags move freely and the rollers are clean, then a sensor or its wiring has failed. Brother's documentation reaches the same conclusion — if the message continues after the clearing procedures, the machine requires repair. That is a legitimate answer rather than a failure to try hard enough.
Weigh the repair against the machine. On an inexpensive inkjet, a sensor replacement usually costs more than the printer, and the honest recommendation is replacement. On a laser printer or an office all-in-one, a sensor or a roller kit is a routine and worthwhile repair, and these machines are built for it.
When you contact support, give them the tests. Say whether a full unplugged power cycle changed anything even briefly, which access points you opened, whether any paper was torn during the original jam, whether the sensor flags move and return freely, and whether the error appears at idle or only when feeding. Those five answers separate a fragment from a stuck flag from a dead sensor, and they are the difference between a part number and a guess.
