Xbox headset not working: game audio, chat or the controller?

For controller-connected Xbox headsets, separate game audio from chat. The Xbox One Chat Headset is chat-only, low controller batteries can disable audio, and adapter balance can remove either side of the game/chat mix.

The short version

  1. 01Identify the headset model and whether game audio, chat audio or microphone input is missing.
  2. 02Check controller charge and seat the headset or adapter firmly.
  3. 03Release microphone mute and adjust the headset's overall volume.
  4. 04Review game/chat balance on a compatible stereo adapter rather than raising overall volume alone.
  5. 05Update the Xbox controller's software before repeating the headset test.
  6. 06Compare the headset on another device and compare the headset plus adapter on another controller.

Likely causes

  • A chat-only headset is expected to play game audio.
  • Low controller batteries disable audio functions, or a jack or adapter is not seated.
  • Mute, volume or game/chat balance suppresses the needed audio.

Check the model and missing audio type

Xbox explicitly says the Xbox One Chat Headset does not receive game sounds or music. For controller-connected stereo headsets, separate game playback, hearing friends and microphone input. This reference covers the controller jack and Xbox stereo adapter; a separate wireless headset needs its own model instructions.

Check controller power and game/chat balance

Xbox says weak controller batteries can turn off audio and rumble to conserve power. Check charge, securely seat the jack or adapter, and release mute. On the stereo adapter, game/chat balance can range from all game to all chat; overall volume changes both together. Its mute button affects the microphone, not game or music playback.

Compare the headset and controller separately

Update controller software. Xbox's stereo test tries the headset with another device, then the headset and adapter on another controller. Those comparisons isolate a faulty headset from a controller path. If using an Xbox headset through a controller on a Windows PC, note that the documented Bluetooth-controller connection does not support that headset path.

Sources and review notes

Checked on . Based on Xbox's expanded chat and stereo-headset articles. Separating playback from chat and retaining comparisons are editorial guidance. Compatibility and controls depend on the headset and adapter; these are not universal instructions for third-party wireless radios. Glitchary is independent of Xbox.
