The short version
- 01Identify whether the controller contains AA batteries or a compatible official removable battery pack.
- 02Charge rechargeable AA batteries using their manufacturer's external charging method.
- 03Seat the official pack correctly and use USB-C for the newer Xbox Wireless Controller.
- 04Connect the controller before turning the console on to begin the documented charging sequence.
- 05Compare another compatible cable and clean the removed pack's contacts using Xbox's documented method.
- 06Test with AA batteries or another official pack to separate the pack from the controller.
Likely causes
- Rechargeable AA batteries require an external charger.
- The official pack, its contacts or the USB cable does not connect correctly.
- The rechargeable pack has worn out, or the controller has a hardware fault.
First identify the battery type
Xbox says ordinary rechargeable AA batteries do not recharge inside the controller. Use their manufacturer's charging method. This reference covers controllers with removable AA batteries or compatible Xbox packs; it does not apply that procedure to a controller with an integrated battery.
For an official pack, check seating and the cable
Insert the pack with its connection side aligned first. The newer Xbox Wireless Controller needs USB-C, including when using an older Xbox One Play & Charge pack. Xbox's sequence connects the cable, then turns on the console to begin charging; the console can subsequently be turned off. An animated battery indicator means charging, while a plug icon identifies a wired connection.
Compare the cable, pack and controller
Secure both cable ends and compare another compatible cable. For the removed pack's contacts, Xbox permits a dry cloth or isopropyl alcohol with a cotton swab, not water. Test AA batteries or a different Xbox pack: if those work, Xbox says the controller is not the cause. Retain the comparison before replacing a worn pack.
