Apple TV not connecting to Wi-Fi? Check the connection stage

Fix missing Wi-Fi options, password failures and hotel sign-ins on Apple TV, and separate network trouble from a streaming-service failure.

By Glitchary · Updated · 3 min read

The short version

  1. 01Disconnect Ethernet when switching the Apple TV to Wi-Fi.
  2. 02Forget a failed saved network and rejoin with the current password.
  3. 03Complete captive-network sign-in on the prompted iPhone or iPad.
  4. 04Reduce wireless obstructions and compare Ethernet when the model has a port.
  5. 05Update tvOS over a working connection and then retest Wi-Fi.
  6. 06Check the provider and another device when Wi-Fi connects but streaming fails.

Separate joining Wi-Fi from streaming over it

Check Settings, Network before troubleshooting an app. Missing Wi-Fi options can be explained by a connected Ethernet cable. A password failure needs a fresh network connection; a hotel login needs its additional sign-in. If other apps stream successfully, investigate the failing service first.

Applies to: Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K boxes. Ethernet tests require a model with an Ethernet port; captive-network steps require current software and an iPhone or iPad.

Where does the connection stop?

Keep the exact onscreen message. A missing network, rejected password and film that will not play are different starting points, even when all three feel like the internet is down.

1. Look for an Ethernet connection

Apple TV uses Ethernet when the cable is connected, hiding the Wi-Fi option. Unplug Ethernet to switch to wireless and allow several minutes for Wi-Fi to become available. Open Settings, Network and select your network; the box does not need to be set up again.

2. Replace a failed saved connection

Open Settings, Network, Wi-Fi, select the saved network and choose Forget Network. Go back, select the network again and enter its current password. Restart Apple TV through Settings, System, Restart if necessary. On a managed network, ask the administrator about required profiles.

3. Complete a hotel or guest-network login

Join the network and choose Continue on iPhone or iPad when prompted. Complete the required sign-in on that device. Captive networks can expire a session, so a connection that worked yesterday may need this step again today. Ask the host about access limits if the portal keeps refusing the device.

4. Test the local network

Move the box and router into the same room if practical, avoiding metal obstructions and immediate proximity to the router. Restart your own router and modem. With an Ethernet-equipped model, compare a cable connection to the router. A working wired test narrows the investigation toward the wireless path.

5. Update using a working connection

Once connected, open Settings, System, Software Updates, Update Software and install the offered update. Keep the box powered and connected until it finishes. If Ethernet supplied the connection, unplug the cable afterward and explicitly retest Wi-Fi; successful wired playback has not tested the wireless link.

6. Stop changing Wi-Fi when only one service fails

For a connected box with playback trouble, compare another device on the same network and check the provider's service status. Apple also identifies account sign-in and simultaneous-stream limits as possible causes. Working playback in another app is evidence against a complete network outage, not proof that every service is reachable.

Give support the failed app, exact message, comparison-device result and whether Ethernet changed anything. That is more useful than reporting only that Wi-Fi does not work.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Apple TV 4K models have Ethernet?

No. The third-generation Wi-Fi model has no Ethernet port. Use the wireless checks when the hardware has no wired connection.

Should I factory-reset to change networks?

No. Settings, Network lets you join another network without erasing the box.
