Discord not opening: frozen startup or a failed installation?

A frozen loading screen and a Windows installer failure need different paths. Start with service status and a complete restart; use Discord's local-folder cleanup only for the installation or update branch.

The short version

  1. 01Record whether Discord shows a loading screen, update loop or installer error.
  2. 02Check Discord Status before changing the local installation.
  3. 03Close Discord fully, including Task Manager processes, wait 30 seconds and reopen.
  4. 04Back up Discord settings and data before installation cleanup.
  5. 05For Windows installer failures, remove only the Discord folders in AppData and LocalAppData after closing Discord.
  6. 06Restart Windows, reinstall from Discord's official download and send persistent errors to Discord support.

Likely causes

  • A service or connection issue freezes loading.
  • A stray Discord process or previous installation data blocks installation or updating.

Identify the startup state before clearing data

Our first distinction is a visible loading screen versus an installer or updater failure. Discord's general guidance checks service status and fully closes the app, including Task Manager processes, before reopening after 30 seconds. Keep the exact message and the point where startup stops.

Windows installation failures: close processes and preserve data

Discord instructs users to back up settings and data before installation fixes. Its installer procedure closes Discord, ends remaining Discord processes and deletes only the Discord folders under %AppData% and %LocalAppData%. If a folder is still in use, check Task Manager again. This removes local application data; do not delete the parent AppData directories.

Restart, reinstall and retain the result

The Windows installer article then restarts the computer and reinstalls through Discord's official download. If that sequence fails, use its support route with the error and retry result. Our recommendation is to distinguish a continuing installer error from a newly working app with a separate connection issue.

Folder cleanup here is Windows-specific; this reference does not apply those paths to macOS or mobile. Glitchary is independent of Discord.
