Fire TV Stick won't connect to Wi-Fi: router link or internet?

Fire TV's Network Status tool separates the connection to the router from internet access beyond it. Initial setup and an already configured Stick also have different restart and reconnection instructions.

The short version

  1. 01Record whether Wi-Fi failed during initial setup or on an already configured Fire TV Stick.
  2. 02After setup, open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause to inspect Network Status.
  3. 03During setup, refresh a missing network list with Back and follow the setup restart branch.
  4. 04After setup, unplug Fire TV for 10 seconds, then toggle Wi-Fi or forget and rejoin the network.
  5. 05Restart the modem and router in Amazon's documented order if internet access fails.
  6. 06Consider factory reset only after the earlier checks and prepare for account and downloaded-content removal.

Start here

Check the local network and internet separately

Use Network Diagnostics on the error screen, or Settings > Network and Play/Pause after setup. Keep the two results separate. If this is initial setup, use Amazon's setup-specific refresh and restart route.

Applies to: Fire TV Stick Wi-Fi setup and reconnection. Network Status options and Ethernet adapters depend on the model.

Find the matching check

Use the observed result to choose a branch, then retry before proceeding.

Read both Network Status results

The tool reports the Stick-to-router connection separately from router-to-internet access. Open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause, or select Network Diagnostics from the error. Speed-test and Advanced options exist only on compatible models.

During setup, use its refresh and restart branch

Have the correct network name and password ready. If the list is missing the network, press Back to refresh. Amazon's setup article unplugs Fire TV power for one minute, then retries. Its final comparison is supported Ethernet, which can require an adapter.

After setup, restart and rejoin the network

The post-setup article unplugs Fire TV for 10 seconds. If needed, toggle Wi-Fi off/on in Settings > Network. To forget the network, highlight it, press Menu, then Select/OK. Rejoin with its current password.

Compare another device before resetting the Stick

Our recommendation is to retain another device's same-network result. Amazon's network restart unplugs modem and router for one minute, then starts the modem first and router second, waiting about a minute for each to connect. A wider failure belongs with the network/provider.

Compare a closer position or supported Ethernet

Amazon recommends bringing Fire TV and the router closer. Its setup branch also offers Ethernet where supported. Our recommendation is to keep the same network during the closer-position test, then record whether the local-link result improves.

Read the reset consequence before using it

Amazon places factory reset after the earlier post-setup checks. It removes account information and downloaded content. Our recommendation is to prepare the login and any needed content first, then follow the model's reset instructions; the remote shortcut can automatically proceed if its prompt is left unanswered.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the restart timings differ?

Amazon's current initial-setup article specifies a one-minute unplug. Its post-setup connection article specifies 10 seconds for Fire TV. Use the branch matching the failure stage.

Does a working Wi-Fi link prove internet access works?

No. Network Status reports the local router connection and internet connection separately. Retain both results before choosing a repair.
