The short version
- 01Run Settings > Network > Check connection and record each test result.
- 02Check whether the failed step is the local network or internet access.
- 03Open a public website on another device connected to the same network.
- 04Restart Roku through its available System restart control or the documented power procedure.
- 05Use Roku's shared Wi-Fi and internet procedure to restart the router or modem and reconnect.
- 06Give continuing internet failures to the provider with both devices' comparison results.
Raw message
Error 009 — unable to connect to the internet
Likely causes
- Roku cannot reach the internet even if its local network connection succeeds.
- The router, modem, internet service or Roku connection needs investigation.
Use Check connection to identify the failed step
Roku's current table identifies 009 as an internet-connection failure. Settings > Network > Check connection separately tests the local network and internet access. Record which check fails; a successful Wi-Fi link does not establish that the router can reach the internet.
Compare another device on the same network
Roku's internet branch opens a public website on another device. A failure there too suggests a broader network or provider problem. Its shared connection article supplies Roku, router and modem restarts. Follow that procedure rather than a factory reset: the local-link result decides whether reconnecting Wi-Fi is relevant.
Retain the network and internet results for the provider
Our recommendation is to give the provider the failed test and same-network comparison. If the other device works, retain that distinction for Roku support. A working comparison narrows the scope; it does not by itself identify a blocked address or a defective Roku.
Sources and review notes
Checked on . Based on Roku's current code table and two-stage connection test. Interpreting and retaining comparisons are editorial guidance. Shared network repair is linked rather than duplicated; this code does not diagnose an HDMI/HDCP problem. Glitchary is independent of Roku.
