Roku error 003: the software update could not be downloaded

Roku documents 003 as an update that cannot be downloaded, one of five numbered update failures from 001 to 005. The number tells you which stage failed, and all five share one troubleshooting sequence.

The short version

  1. 01Wait a few minutes and try again, since Roku's update services can be briefly unavailable.
  2. 02Open Settings then Network and confirm the device is on the network name you expect.
  3. 03Open a website on a phone or computer using the same router to confirm the internet works.
  4. 04Unplug the Roku for 30 seconds and the router for 20 to 30 seconds, then power both back on.
  5. 05Retry deliberately from Home, then Settings, System, System update, Check now.
  6. 06Connect the player to the router with an Ethernet cable if the update keeps failing.

Raw message

Error 003: Update cannot be downloaded

Likely causes

  • A Roku update service that is temporarily unavailable, which resolves on its own.
  • The device joined to the wrong wireless network, so the update cannot be fetched.
  • A home internet connection that is down or unreliable at the moment of the update.
  • A Wi-Fi signal too weak to sustain the download, which Roku codes separately as 002.
  • A connection that drops mid-download, which Roku codes separately as 005.

What the number means, and the four beside it

Roku documents five numbered update failures, and reading yours tells you which stage broke. 001 is cannot reach the update server. 002 is internet connection is too weak. 003, the one most people see, is update cannot be downloaded. 004 is software update failed. 005 is connection timed out.

Every one of them is a network story rather than a fault in the device. None of them indicates failing hardware, and none is resolved by a factory reset — which is worth saying plainly, because resetting a Roku to fix an update error costs you every app login you had and does nothing about the connection that failed.

The practical consequence of the five sharing one cause is that they share one fix. The sequence below is Roku's, and it applies whichever of the five numbers you were shown.

Roku's sequence

Start by waiting. Roku's first instruction is to wait a few minutes and try again, because its update services may be temporarily unavailable — a case where the device, the network and the router are all fine and the only correct action is patience.

Then confirm the device is on the network you think it is. Roku directs you to Settings, then Network, and to confirm the network name is correct, reconnecting with the right wireless name and password if you are unsure. A Roku that joined a neighbour's guest network or an old SSID during setup will show update errors indefinitely while appearing connected.

Confirm the internet itself works by opening a website on a phone or computer connected to the same router. That separates a Roku problem from an outage in about ten seconds, and it is worth doing before power cycling anything.

Then power cycle deliberately: unplug the Roku's power cable, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in; unplug the router, wait 20 to 30 seconds and plug it back in. Afterwards, retry the update explicitly from Home, then Settings, System, System update, Check now, rather than waiting for the device to try again on its own schedule.

When it keeps failing

Roku's own escalation is a cable. Connecting the player directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, on models that have a port, provides a faster and more reliable connection — and an update that fails repeatedly over Wi-Fi very often completes first time over a wire.

If the model has no Ethernet port, the equivalent test is to move it closer to the router temporarily, or to try a different internet source. An update that succeeds on a different network tells you the problem is your home connection rather than the device, which is a useful thing to know before spending money on either.

Sources and review notes

Checked on . Based on Roku's support article on streaming device update problems, which is where the meanings of codes 001 to 005 and the troubleshooting sequence come from. The note that a factory reset does not address these codes is editorial. Menu paths differ slightly between Roku players and Roku TVs. Glitchary is independent of Roku.
